Walton Muyumba is a writer and critic.

Muyumba is the author of The Shadow and the Act: Black Intellectual Practice, Jazz Improvisation, and Philosophical Pragmatism (University of Chicago Press). 

His writing has appeared in The Atlantic, The Believer, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The New York Times Book Review, The New Republic, Oxford American, and among other outlets. He sat on the National Book Critics Circle’s Board of Directors, 2014-2020.

He’s an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Indiana University-Bloomington.
